Historian and writer Richard Gwyn has completed the second volume of his biography of Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, entitled Nation Maker.

He says Macdonald set the tone for our nation, so similar yet so different from the United States.

"Northwest Mounted Police was the first distinctive Canadian institution.

"It went west and created a West that was totally different from the American West.

"In the American West, justice and power came out of the gun.

"In the Canadian West, justice and power came out of good order of government," said Gwyn.
