The AMT has apologized to commuters, after new schedules and a series of mechanical problems disrupted train service last week.

"It was a week of nightmares, especially on the mechanical side and the communication to our customers, and I sincerely want to apologize," said Joel Gauthier, president of the Agence mtropolitaine de transport.

In an effort to improve service after raising fares, the AMT introduced extra train departures and additional train cars last Monday. But mechanical glitches and scheduling errors prevented several trains from departing when they were supposed to, leaving commuters both frustrated and disappointed.

"It's been terrible every night," passenger Nancy Farewell told CTV Montreal.

The AMT has promised to have staff present on both the platforms and the trains in the coming days to handle questions from passengers.

"It is not normal and it is unacceptable that when there is a problem or a delay that we can't talk to our customers, and we're going to improve that," said Gauthier.

The Deux-Montagnes and Mont-Sainte-Hilaire lines will see additional train cars as of Monday, he added.

Farewell said she's not convinced the promised changes will make a difference to irritated commuters.

"I know a lot of people that I used to take the train with that are now saying, 'The heck with it, I'll leave a half hour earlier and take my car in.'"
