Montreal musician Yannick Nezet-Seguin will succeed James Levine as the music director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York City.

He will be the music director-designate of the MET for the 2017-2018 season and will take on the full duties of the position in 2020-21.

The 41 year-old has served as the artistic director and principal conductor of Montreal’s Orchestre Metropolitan since 2000.

He has also been the music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra since the 2012-13 season and has also been the chief conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic since 2008-09.

He’ll start by directing two operas per season as director-designate.
