Two elderly people are in hospital after a fire in Outremont early on Sunday morning.

A Montreal fire department spokesperson said the fire in a residential building on Marsolais started just before 5:00 a.m. The fire started on the first floor of the three-story building, eventually spreading to the second.

The two injured people were sent to hospital with second degree burns.

The 82-year-old woman is in critical condition while the 79-year-old man is now in stable condition.

"The SPVM arson squad are still working with the firefighters because of the severity of the victims' injuries," said Andrée-Anne Picard

A police spokesperson says it appears to be accidental and most likely electrical.

The home sustained $72,000 worth of damage and there were no functioning smoke alarms found inside.
