Ticket scalpers have lost a legal battle in Quebec Superior Court.

Justice Daniel Payette has ruled against a legal challenge to a law that prevents companies and individuals from reselling tickets for higher than the face value of the ticket.

The law, passed in October 2011, was challenged by several ticket reselling companies represented by Julius Grey, who argued the law prevented them from doing business.

Justice Payette disagreed, saying the law limits certain commercial practices and make affect how much companies can earn, but does not, in fact, prevent anyone from buying and reselling a ticket.

Comedian Louis-José Houde prompted the public debate on the issue while onstage at the ADISQ awards in November 2010, when he questioned why ticket reselling sites were the first websites visible when anyone tried to purchase tickets online.
