Montreal police arrested an armed man overnight after he robbed a grocery store located just a few blocks away from a police station.

Around 11 p.m. the man robbed the Metro grocery store on Ste. Catherine St. at the corner of Dorion St.

As the robber ran out of the store, he jumped into one of the taxis waiting at the stand on the corner, but he only made it one block before being stopped by police.

"Following the intervention the driver of the taxi took the decision to get out of the taxi and run away. so the suspect in the car went to the driver's seat and left the scene with the vehicle," said Jean-Pierre Brabant.

Police gave chase, but after a kilometre the robber crashed the taxi, flipping it onto its roof at the intersection of Bercy St.

Officers hauled the man out of the wreckage, then took him to hospital so he could be treated for his injuries.

The man was questioned about the crime overnight and is likely going to appear in court later on Wednesday.
