Quebec's love of small cars is transforming into an affair with SUVs.

Almost one new vehicle in three now sold in Quebec is an SUV according to Protegez-Vous magazine and the Automobile Protection Association.

Over the past ten years the number of large cars sold in Quebec has tripled, now sitting at 30.2 percent of all vehicles sold in Quebec in 2014.

For the first time that means SUVs are more popular in Quebec than small cars (30%) and subcompact cars (11.5%), despite costing more, producing more pollution, and having higher running costs.

According to George Iny of the APA Quebecers could be choosing SUVs because they are more likely to have four-wheel drive, useful in getting out of snow drifts.

"We talk the talk, but as consumers we will not walk the walk," said Iny.

"What we want is all-wheel drive, we want to sit high like in a truck and we're upsizing because gas is cheap right now."

Interest rates continue to be extremely low, meaning the possibility of financing a car for a long period of time is more reasonable.

The annual new and used car rating report from the Automobile Protection Association and Protegez-Vous magazine is now available.
