The province announced Sunday funds and a new five-year action plan to fight homelessness.

Lucie Charlebois, the minister responsible for youth protection and public health, says the Liberal government will invest $4.6 million.

That's in addition to the more than $8 million already announced to fight poverty and homelessness.

The money will be used to build 500 low-cost housing units, and there will be a one-time pay out of $2 million for special projects.

The plan focuses on helping people avoid becoming homeless, getting the homeless off the streets as quickly as possible and specific measures aimed at First Nations and Inuit populations.

The plan will roll out from 2015 to 2020.

Though some groups have signaled their approval of the plan, the Montreal-based homeless solidarity network says the plan is welcome, but that the money pledged is not enough to make a real difference.
