MONTREAL - A former Expos great who is spearheading the attempt to bring Major League Baseball back to Montreal is welcoming comments from Commissioner Bud Selig.

Selig said Tuesday that Montreal would be an "excellent candidate" for getting a future franchise.

Former Expos outfielder Warren Cromartie tells The Canadian Press that Selig's remarks suggest the city is firmly on baseball's radar.

In March, 96,350 fans turned up in Montreal for a pair of exhibition games between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets.

Selig called the attendance figures impressive but cautioned that Montreal would still have a lot of work to do before landing a franchise.

The Expos played in Montreal from 1969 to 2004, when they departed for Washington, D.C.
