The PQ candidates for the leadership race continued to jostle for the lead Thursday, and focused mainly on the need for quick action on secularism issues.

Another topic was Premier Philippe Couillard’s connections in Saudi Arabia, some believing it to be the reason why he was delaying action on secularism.

Leadership candidate Jean-Francois Lisée said he wanted the Liberal party to realize the importance of dealing with this issue.

“I feel the premier is just on another planet,” said Lisée to journalists, “when he says in front of foreign representatives that there is no link between secularism and terrorism.”

Lisée added, “It probably stems from a goodwill reflex of not wanting to stigmatize Muslims. But Muslims are the first victims.”

However, Pierre Karl Péladeau, also in the running for the PQ leadership, said he thinks economic issues should be discussed too.

“I don’t think that no one can arrive at the conclusion that we only care about secularism,” said Peladeau. “From my perspective, being in the business world for so many years, the economic features and issues would be of importance also.”

The nomination race for the leadership of the PQ will be over by the end of January.
