Mum’s the word. The PQ apparently now has it all figured out. The secret to winning the next election and taking Quebecers down the merry path to separation bliss.

The top secret plan is a two-year road map on how to make Quebecers love the Pequistes again.  But lips are sealed. It’s that secret. It was unveiled at a meeting of all the Pequiste bigwigs in Trois Rivieres last weekend.   “No comment,” was the common cry. The secret is top secret.

I, for one, am so curious about how a party which has recorded a decline in support in every election for 20 years can come up with something new. We have been through sovereignty, sovereignty association, winning conditions, trick questions, identity politics, victimization and more. Nothing has worked, nor will it.

The secret, you see, no matter what it is, is guaranteed to be another contrived PQ scheme. Because the real secret has been out for years, and Quebecers know it’s a sham.

SAQ prices can drive you to drink

Now, what ever happened to that thoughtful report that was tabled last year on the SAQ?

You may remember the government-appointed committee made a bold recommendation. Well, bold for Quebec nanny-state standards. The committee said quite clearly that the SAQ monopoly should end. It seems to have been a one-day wonder, because it appears the report was filed away under D for Dead.

Now, this week, we saw once again why the SAQ shouldn’t be the only kid in town. The monopoly raised its prices on a couple of hundred items. It says it’s all because of currency adjustments. Really? So when the Canadian dollar is stronger, then the logic would be that they lower the prices. Dream on.

The SAQ makes so much money with obscene profit margins; it really could cover higher costs. It negotiates most of its contracts in Canadian dollars. It’s like the airlines that still make customers pay fuel surcharges when the cost of jet fuel is the lowest in years. At least airline, customers can try to shop around. With wine and spirits, we don’t have much of a choice and the Liberals should have the courage to dust off that report and move us into the 21st century.

Canada playing the Trump card

Are we really ready to handle the flood of Trump refugees in Canada?

The scorched earth politics happening south of the border are apparently making some of our American friends look north. Canada looks downright gentle and civilized in comparison to the prospect of a Trump presidency, which is scaring the daylights out of them. It’s not hard to understand.

Cape Breton seems to be ahead of the pack in laying out the welcome mat. What started out as something of a joke has turned into serious business with hundreds of calls and inquiries coming in from the USA. Cape Breton is a piece of paradise. I understand the interest.

Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free  in a Trump-free constitutional monarchy;  the big, kind-of-blue state north of the 49th is a lot like Vermont

Canada:  We offer asylum:   American dollars accepted at par.
