The police ethics committee has cleared five Montreal police officers accused of failing to protect a woman who was later murdered by her estranged husband.

Maria Altagarcia Dorval, 28, was stabbed to death inside her Montreal North apartment in October 2010.

Her husband Edens Kenol was later arrested and convicted of her murder.

Relatives of the victim accused the Montreal police of not heeding warnings that Kenol posed a threat against Dorval, who called police on several occasions to complain that her husband wanted to kill her.

The police ethics committee ruled however that the officers involved were not negligent.

The family has since launched a $700,000 wrongful death suit against the city.
