A couple accused of sexually abusing two girls were formally charged in Quebec City Wednesday.

The 36-year-old man and 23-year-old woman from Saint-Lin-Laurentides were charged with several sexual assault charges against two girls aged seven and 11, one of whom was their own child.

The Sureté du Quebec said it discovered the two victims, and the two suspects, by analyzing data taken from two other people who have been in custody for six months.

A 30-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman, were arrested in June and charged with possession, distribution and production of child pornography.

They have been in custody ever since, but will appear in court later this week to face new charges of sexual assault.

The two children were taken into the care of Youth Protection.
