Major work begins this week to remove paralumes from the Ville-Marie Expressway.

Starting Monday Oct. 27 until the end of December, one westbound lane of Highway 720 will be closed between Panet St. and Sanguinet St.

Viger Ave., which parallels the highway, will be closed from Panet St.until St. André St. for the same duration.

All westbound lanes of the highway will be closed nightly from Panet St. until Hotel de Ville Ave. until the end of the year.

Transport Quebec says the operation to remove the paralumes will also force crews to close all lanes for one or two weekends, on dates that have not yet been determined.

The concrete sunscreens, also known as paralumes, that cover the highway burst into public consciousness in July 2011 when one collapsed onto the highway.

Following that accident paralumes were removed from the eastbound lanes of the Ville Marie, and from the entrance and exit to the Lafontaine tunnel.
