MONTREAL - Students returning to Vanier College from Winter break on Monday were greeted with a warning from the CEGEP's administration: mould was found in one of the main campus buildings.

Discovered during a regular inspection in November, the mould is isolated to part of the N building's ventilation system.

While the college stressed in a letter to students and staff on Dec. 13 that the mould was within acceptable levels, it has since taken steps to reduce exposure. Students and staff can now request to have classes or their office moved if they have respiratory problems.

"This isn't a situation to be taken lightly and we are looking at replacing the ventilation system so that we get rid of the problem," said Gilbert Heroux, Vanier's director general. "However serious this might or might not be it is a problem for us."

Confirming that ventilation ducts leading to classrooms have yet to show traces of mould, the college has renovations scheduled for this summer to replace the 25-year-old building's duct system.

Students and staff are being asked to remain conscientious of the situation and Vanier has started a blog to keep the campus updated on the situation.
