Two Montrealers planning a cycling tour of South America are using social media to trying to get the attention of Air Canada after one of their bicycles went missing in transit.

Shea Mayer and Jesse Herbert arrived in Buenos Aires, Argentina more than 10 days ago, but Herbert’s bike did not.

“We've arrived in Argentina to start a six-week cycling trip, but there's one major problem,” said Mayer in a video they recorded and posted on social media.

“Yeah, my bike got lost by Air Canada and Tam Airlines and they won't help me navigate the situation,” responded Herbert.

The pair is hoping to get some answers.

The bike and touring gear, estimated to cost of close to $4000, were supposed to arrive on Dec. 31.

“It's not like we just lost a t-shirt and a pair of shorts. It's a mode of transportation really,” said Herbert.

Both men work in the cycling industry. Mayer runs the Montreal cycling tour company Fitz and Follwell and Herbert designs bike accessories for Oopsmark.

“Cycle touring is fun because you get to stumble across problems that need solutions,” said Herbert. “For me it's a great vacation but it's also an opportunity to interface with a thriving bicycle community here.”

Herbert has been contacting both airlines by phone and email, and said he hasn't gotten very far with either one.

“I've been spending two to four hours a day on the phone with Air Canada and Tam Airlines, trying to see what's going on. It's pretty hard to interface with the airlines here because they speak mostly Spanish,” he said.

An Air Canada spokesperson told CTV they've been in touch with Herbert through social media and have spoken to him twice a day to assist as best they can.

They say the luggage would be with Tam Airlines and that they will continue to follow up with them, to ensure he receives his bicycle as soon as possible.

Air Canada also offered to cover the rental cost of a bike, but Herbert says bikes for long distance touring are not available to rent in Buenos Aires.

“The thing is, it's not just Jesse’s bike that's in a big cardboard box, but all of his camping gear, all of his clothing. We spent a lot of time preparing for this trip,” said Mayer.

For now, Herbert has ordered a new bike and gear from Mayer's shop.

They say they plan to ask Air Canada to fly it down for them, so they can get on with their tour.
