ALBANY, New York - A Montreal woman caught trying to enter the United States with 70,000 Ecstasy pills was sentenced Tuesday to almost 16 years in prison.

Tara Haynes, 34, was found guilty in August of smuggling a controlled substance.

She had been stopped and arrested by customs agents at Champlain New York who found the drugs in her car in June 2011.

Haynes had attempted to smuggle the pills in bags placed in the gas reservoir of her rented vehicle.

The value of the seized pills was estimated at between $500,000 and $2.1 million.

Her lawyer had argued that Tara Haynes was unaware that the drugs were in her car.

Her sentence of 15 years and eight months must be served in a American federal penitentiary.
