Crews have finished eight years of work on the Mercier Bridge one week ahead of schedule.
Construction crews working on the federal side of the span have finished replacing 982 concrete deck panels.
With 30 million drivers using the bridge every year, its condition had deteriorated and the aging deck needed to be replaced.
The of Jacques Cartier & Champlain Bridges Corporation estimates the repair work will extend the life of the bridge by 75 years.
Bonaventure closed
Meantime, though, the Bonaventure Expressway toward the Champlain Bridge will be completed closed as of 10 p.m. Monday night.
The closure spans from the Notre-Dame access ramp to the Chemin des Moulins access ramp and is slated to reopen at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The Nazareth St. access ramp to the Bonaventure will also be closed.
In case of inclement weather, the work will be postponed.
