The mayor of Outremont borough will not be running for re-election.

Marie Cinq-Mars said Tuesday that when her term of office ends next year, she will be finished with municipal politics.

"Outremont will, in the course of the next few years, be facing numerous challenges and will benefit from the experience and dedication of engaged and dynamic people," said Cinq-Mars.

Cinq-Mars was first elected in 1999 as a councillor for what was then the city of Outremont, and was elected again as a borough councillor in 2002.

In 2007 she was elected as mayor of the borough in a by-election after the resignation of Stephen Harbour, and was re-elected as borough mayor in 2012.

During her time as borough mayor Outremont has imposed restrictions on places of worship and how Jews can practice their faith, and earlier this year it renamed Vimy Park after the late premier Jacques Parizeau.
