MONTREAL—A convoy of 25 Hydro-Quebec trucks crossed into New York State early Friday morning, Quebec’s contribution to the effort to restore power to millions of New Yorkers still in the dark.

The 60 workers have been given no specific timeline, however the utility expects they will spend at least a week on Long Island, working alongside local work crews for 16 hour days.

The crews will be doing exactly the same kind of work they do in Quebec, cutting trees and restringing power lines. The scale of work though, is monumental. Over 200 workers are already in New Hampshire, helping the residents of that state recover from Hurricane Sandy.

Under a mutual agreement with the United States, Hydro-Quebec provides work crews when the circumstances require the help. Once or twice annually, crews are called after disasters or large-scale power failures.

Local American electrical companies cover the cost of the crews.
