A 41-year-old man, once described as an "important witness" in the death of his wife in St. Michel, was arrested Wednesday and charged with her murder.

The couple's children, who saw their mother's body in the home, remain in protective custody.

"The important witness in that case has met with our detectives and will appear in court (Thursday) on a charge of first-degree murder," said Montreal police spokesman Daniel Lacoursiere.

Paramedics were unable to revive the 37-year-old woman when they answered a call at around 1:10 a.m. at 7917 21st Ave. near Cremazie.

The woman's husband was brought to hospital with injuries and major-crimes investigators met him later on Wednesday. He was arrested after doctors released him.

Young witnesses

The two daughters, aged 11 and 15, were inside the home at the time of the death, as was their grandmother.

The girls were slightly injured and were suffered from shock. It's not yet clear if they were attacked or trying to defend their mother.

This is the 23rd murder in Montreal so far this year.
