A hostage-taking in Montreal ended late Tuesday night with the arrest of a 40-year-old man.

Emergency services received a call around 8 p.m. about a man having a health problem in an apartment on Lavoie St. near Cote-Ste-Catherine Rd.

The man said he had locked himself inside his apartment with two members of his family. He did not have any firearms but police were concerned about the safety of his family.

Police evacuated homes in the area, on Lavoie between Cote-Ste-Catherine and St-Kevin Ave. and Dupuis Ave. between Legare St. and Victoria Ave. as a precaution.

Negotiators from the Montreal police major crimes unit spent the evening talking with the man before he was finally arrested shortly before midnight.

He will undergo a psychiatric assessment before police determine how to proceed.
