A South Shore man has been sentenced to five-and-a-half years in prison for his role in a fatal car crash.

23-year-old Arif Afghani pleaded guilty last year to criminal negligence causing the 2011 deaths of Daniel Clouston and his 10-year-old daughter Catherine.

Afghani's girlfriend suffered permanent brain damage.

The crash happened in March 2011 in St. Laurent. Afghani was driving more than double the 50 km/h speed limit and went through a red light when he slammed into Clouston's SUV.

At the sentencing the judge noted Afghani had a history of reckless driving.

"My husband and my daughter will never come back, but at least what the judge said is, it's not acceptable. So that kind of behaviour is not acceptable," said Lynda Bonneville, the widow.

Afghani's lawyer said his client has 30 days to decide whether he'll appeal the sentence.
