MONTREAL - Bad news for workers at the BlueWater Seafoods plant in Lachine: the facility is set to close on June 1 and 124 employees will be out of work.

BlueWater Seafoods is a Canadian subsidiary of the American Gorton's, which said Thursday in a statement that the decision to close the plant was made in the context of a “comprehensive strategy to consolidate its manufacturing operations in order to increase efficiency.”

The production of fish and seafood will be moved to other affiliated facilities in North America, including the Gorton's plant in Gloucester, Massachusetts.

BlueWater Seafoods promised to support its employees during the transition period and vowed to approach the process with" fairness and respect "
