LAVAL -- An ATV rider is in hospital with serious head injuries after a short police chase in Laval.

It began at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday when police spotted the ATV driving on the road, at the intersection of Cure-Labelle Blvd. and Marc-Aurele-Fortin Ave.

Police say the driver had no helmet, did not have any lights on the vehicle, and ATV's are only allowed to cross roads -- not to drive along them for any significant distance.

Officers attempted to pull over the driver but he fled west, only to crash into the passenger side of a car at the intersection of Marc-Aurele-Fortin and De la Renaissance Ave.

The impact sent the ATV driver into the air and he suffered serious but not life-threatening head injuries when he landed.

He was taken to hospital where blood samples will be used to determine if he was intoxicated.

Police say the 30-year-old man driving the ATV has had several encounters with the law.

The 60-year-old woman driving the car was shaken, but not hurt.
