Quebec’s first post-summer snowfall and high winds has knocked out power for over 40,000 homes on Sunday morning.

According to the Hydro-Quebec website, half of those homes were in the Monteregie region, where over 17,000 clients remain without electricity. Also hard hit were the capital area, Estrie and Lanaudiere.

In Montreal, 850 homes are without power, with most of those being in the West Island region and Verdun.

Most of the outages were caused by fallen tree branches after winds of up 70 km per hour swept through the province.

UPDATE: As of 6:30 p.m., the number of affected homes has dropped to just over 17,000. Monteregie remains the most affected region, with over 5,000 homes still without electricity. In Montreal, there are 326 homes still without power while over 1,600 in Lanaudiere and 1,300 in Estrie are also without service.
