A 23-year-old man is in hospital after defending a woman who was being harassed by a group of 20 youths in Notre Dame de Grace at noon on Thursday.

The passerby intervened after he saw a group throwing rocks the woman from her balcony in an alleyway between West Hill and Randall Aves. He was punched, hit with the top of a toilet and with a stick, and had stones thrown at him. The victim is known to police.

The victim is in hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

"We don't know if all 15 or 20 beat on the gentleman, but he was beaten pretty badly and taken to hospital," said Montreal police Const. Yannick Ouimet.

Two suspects, aged 14 and 15, have been arrested and police are searching for others. The suspects did not go to nearby St. Luc High School, said Ouimet.
