Twenty Montreal metro stations have had their names changed by the Quebec Toponomy Commission, which granted a request by local STM transit authority to modify the names.
- Acadie is now officially called de L'Acadie
- Assomption is de L'Assomption
- Cadillac became De Cadillac
- Champ-de-Mars, du Champ-de-Mars
- Côte-des-Neiges, de la Côte-des-Neiges
- Côte-Sainte-Catherine, de la Côte-Sainte-Catherine
- Côte-Vertu, de la Côte-Vertu
- Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke, de Longueuil-Université-de-Sherbrooke

- Parc, du Parc
- Place-d'Armes, de la Place-d'Armes

- Square-Victoria, du Square-Victoria-OACI
- Université-de-Montréal is now de l'Université-de-Montréal
- Vendôme becomes de Vendôme
- Verdun, de Verdun
The names were changed in early May at the same time that the STM transit authority changed Square-Victoria-OACI, a change designed to honour the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
Other than at the Square-Victoria-OACI metro station switch - a change which costs $125,000 - signage will not be adjusted at the stations, not right away anyway.
“There was only one official request for a change of name and it’s for Square Victoria, which became Square Victoria OACI, the other small changes were not real changes, they were only to standardize with the toponomy of the streets," said STM spokesperson Isabelle Tremblay.
"The stations we’re referring to, they are only articles that will be integrated in our publications and on our websites on our annual report. Eventually when there are other changes to be made, it will be integrated but it’s medium and long-term and it will be at no cost, as opposed to Square Victoria, which cost money,” she told CTV Montreal Tuesday.
Dozens of Montreal street names were similarly changed with little fanfare in 2001, as Rue Courcelle became Rue De Courcelle, Rue Courville became Rue De Courville, Avenue Darlington became Avenue De Darlington and so forth.
