Three EMSB schools that could have faced closure will be spared for now following a heated meeting on Tuesday evening.

St. Gabriel in Point St-Charles, St-Brendan in Rosemont and St. Dorothy school in St. Michel will not be put before consultations that would have been a possible first step to closure, commissioners decided.

Parents erupted in cheers at the marathon meeting that lasted well into the evening.

Possible changes

The English Montreal School Board has been considering closures, relocations and program and boundary changes in the face of declining enrolment.

The EMSB expects to lose about 8,000 students in the next seven years.
