ST-JEROME, Quebec - A splashy trial involving a female teacher who allegedly had sex 300 times with a 15-year-old student was not short of drama Wednesday as the accused, Tania Pontbriand, 41, wept and shook and was excused from the stand for 20 minutes to recuperate in St-Jerome court.
Pontbriand denied the charges outright told of how the allegations have devastated her career and disrupted her family life.
She is charged with one count of sexual assault and two counts of sexual exploitation of a minor for the relationship with allegedly took place between 2002 and 2004, when she was 32 years-old.
Pontbriand's lawyer has argued that the case violates her right to speedy trial. The judge ruled Wednesday that the case would be delayed until Friday while that complaint gets studied.
The former teacher lost her composure, crying and shaking and apparently having trouble breathing during testimony Wednesday.
The prosecution presented Pontbriand with an internal investigation conducted by the Sir Wilfred Laurier School Board, which concluded the the teacher had an inappropriate relationship with the boy, who is now 24.
It reported she took the boy alone on camping, despite the fact that he had psychological issues.
"You took a boy who was fragile and possibly suicidal on retreat to get him to confide in you," read the report. "It was bold and dangerous. Many people warned you, and you continued... it was immature and irresponsible."
The school board also has letters in which Pontbriand describes the teenager as her soul mate. Pontbriand lost her license to teach over the allegations.
She complained that her dismissal and the retraction of her teacher's license in June had made it impossible for her to earn a living and made life difficult for her two children.
The prosecution alleged that the school acted properly and that she had continued the sexual relations with the young man even after she had been warned by the school to stop.
The new information regarding the alleged victim's state of mind at the time has yet to be introduced as evidence in the trial, as the defence continues to seek to have the case thrown out by the judge.
The defence team argues that the affair never took place. The prosecution supplied a sleeping bag Tuesday which apparently provides evidence in the form of DNA from Pontbriand and the plaintiff.
The former Sir Wilfrid Laurier physical education teacher could face 10 years in prison for the alleged offences.
