The man who was shot and permanently injured by Richard Bain the night of the Metropolis shooting is relieved the jury found the shooter guilty.

Dave Courage still lives with the physical and psychological aftereffects of the Sept. 2012 shooting.

Before Tuesday's verdict, Courage was worried Bain might be found not guilty of shooting him and his friend Denis Blanchette.

Courage said he was even concerned there was a conspiracy behind the attack, and as the jury's deliberations went on, he was concerned the jury would find Bain not criminally responsible.

"I don't think justice would be served for anyone if we just lock him up and throw away the key. We need to get to the bottom of it," said Courage.

Courage, now 31, was one of several technicians at the back of the club when Bain arrived on the night Pauline Marois was elected leader of a minority Parti Quebecois government.

Bain fired one bullet which went through Blanchette and struck Courage.

The Crown argued that Bain was outraged over problems in his life, including being denied the right to vote in the election, and sought to strike out at separatists.

With the verdict rendered and a sentencing to happen in a few weeks, Courage said society needs to figure out how to stop a similar attack in the future.

" What made it happen and how do we prevent things like this from recurring? That's what we need to do, instead of just pointing the finger and saying get rid of the problem. No we need to know how the problem happened in the first place and how to avoid it happening again," said Courage.

The bullet killed Blanchette and went through Courage's hips, shattering his bones and leaving him in permanent pain.

Courage testified during the trial, and said that during his testimony Bain smiled at him.

That prompted Courage to address Bain directly, telling him "Smile all you want, but you did this to me and you killed Denis."

Courage said he believes that is when Bain recognized the severity of his crime.

Bain will be sentenced on Sept. 6, 2016, more than four years after the murder and attempted murders.
