In the wake of Piedmont woman Natasha Cournoyer's mysterious death last weekend, questions are swirling about how she could be taken from the parking lot outside her workplace in Laval.

Whatever the case, some of the following safety tips can help women avoid an assault:

  •  Increasing your personal awareness. Walk with your head up and look around.
  • Walk with your keys in your hand.
  • When walking, keep your purse close to your body.
  • Avoid parks, dark parking lots and construction areas after dark. Walk only on well-lit, well-travelled streets.
  • If you believe you are being followed as you walk, turn around and look.
  • If someone approaches you, back up and don't let them come near you. Walk toward the street.
  • Keep your hands up. If you need to defend yourself against an attacker, your hands will be at his face.
  • When attacked, attack back. It may safe your life.
  • When in danger, scream for help.
  • Trust your instincts.
