Quebec saw a couple of gold medals slip through its fingers at the Canada Games in Sherbrooke Thursday, as the girls soccer team lost to British Columbia 3-2 and the boys volleyball lost in three straight sets to Alberta.

In the soccer final, Amandine Pierre-Louis (25th minute) and Valerie Sanderson (34th) scored for Quebec. Sam Dion netted two markers (ninth minute, 37th) and Seina Kashima (21st) scored for B.C.

Dion’s second goal proved to the game winner.

The boys volleyball finals were less close, however, as Alberta cruised from the start and never looked back, giving the Quebec team little opportunity to duplicate their majestic five-set win over Ontario Wednesday.

Quebec volleyball coach Rock Picard noted that his squad appeared emotionally drained throughout and even an enthusiastic crowd at the Sports Centre of the University of Sherbrooke was unable to rouse the boys.

Nonetheless, Picard said he was still “very satisfied” with his team’s performance, as few imagined that Quebec had the stuff to reach the finals.

Quebec's boys volleyball team came in fifth place four years ago in P.E.I. and last won the Canada Games title in Brandon in 1997.

Meanwhile, other disappointing results for Quebec teams included a 82-76 boys basketball loss and a 6-5 girls softball loss, both to Manitoba.

Quebec’s basketball team plays for the bronze Friday while the girls softball squad gets another chance to reach the final in a rematch Friday.
