A small group of Concordia students are giving up the comforts of home to help the homeless.

The students are raising money for the group Dans la Rue, living and sleeping outside for five days to help raise awareness about the homeless.

They say most Montrealers don't realize that 30,000 people are homeless in the city and fundraiser Kristina Partsinevelos also cautioned against false stereotypes.

"A lot of people think 'oh, they chose to be that way,' "  she said Monday.

"But there's a lot of reasons ... either they're orphans, they had mental illnesses and weren't treated properly ... there's a lot of different reasons and we shouldn't just jump to any conclusions."

The event is also taking place at 17 other schools across Canada.
