MONTREAL - Montrealers will soon be allowed to travel on some buses with their bicycles.

Montreal's transit corporation, the STM, held a press conference Monday morning to announce a pilot project that will initially allow bus riders put their two-wheelers onto a rack affixed to the front of buses on the Fleury and Salaberry, 140 and 180 bus lines until the end of the summer.

If the experiment is deemed a success, the transit brass will consider adding more such racks on other bus lines around town.

Each rack costs $900 and can hold two bicycles. Transit boss Michel Labrecque tossed a bicycle on with great ease at the morning press conference, proving that one doesn't need great strength to accomplish the deed. The STM has a convenient instruction page on its site to demonstrate the best method of mounting the bike on the rack.

The two pilot-project routes were chosen because of their proximity to popular bike paths.

Bikes are also welcome on the metro between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. and after 7 p.m. weekdays. Riders are permitted to bring bikes onto the metro at all times on weekends.
