Quebec Agriculture Minister Claude Bechard has been hospitalized following emergency surgery related to his pancreatic cancer.

Bechard, 40, caught an infection after a tumour obstructed part of his digestive tract, his office said in a statement on Thursday.

He'll be hospitalized for 10 days and MNA Robert Dutil will assume his duties in the interim.

Bechard has been in and out of cabinet for the past two years after he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was on medical leave for several months in 2008 after a cancerous tumour was removed from his pancreas.
