A Montreal practitioner is facing disciplinary action from the Quebec Order of Psychologists over allegations he spanked one of his patients as part of a therapy session.

The order has ruled that Steven Schacter violated its code of ethics after a complaint was filed in June 2015 alleging he pulled a 19-year-old male’s pants down, put the client on his lap and spanked his buttocks with a paddle.

The patient said Schacter made him believe he was engaging in a legitimate form of therapy aimed at relieving stress.

In its ruling, the order said this was not the case and cited Schacter for failing to record the incident.

It is not yet clear what sanctions he will face.

Schacter could not be reached for comment.
