Conservative MP Maxime Bernier needs to spend more time in Montreal.

At least, that's according to Parti Quebecois leader Pauline Marois, reacting to his comments on a Halifax radio station that Quebec doesn't need Bill 101 to protect the French language.

"Mr. Bernier should come in Montreal more often where we can see there is an Anglicization," she said.

Marois' comments came at the PQ's regional convention on Saturday afternoon.

The event is taking place over Saturday and Sunday at the University of Montreal.

"Quebec would not be what it is now if we didn't have and apply the law 101… that is unacceptable from the part of Mr. Bernier who is a Quebecer," Marois continued.

The party is meeting to discuss and adopt proposals which they will put forward at the PQ national convention April 15-17.

Issues at this weekend's conference include national identity, the creation of wealth, restoring integrity and trust, and Quebec sovereignty.

Marois also used the forum as a chance to take aim at Premier Jean Charest's recent announcement.

Charest will briefly prorogue the legislature so that he can return with a new inaugural speech focused on long-term economic challenges.

"You know we stopped the national Assembly at the 11th of December last year so he had six weeks, seven weeks to prepare this speech. I can't understand," she said.
