Ever get a song in your head that you just can't seem to shake?
For me this week it's that Beatles tune "I'm Looking Through You. You're not the same."
Well I guess it's because of all the talk of those body scanners coming to an airport near you.
I can't see what all the fuss is about.
The world is a pretty darn dangerous place these days. And Canada is a big target.
So, if that's the price to pay to keep our skies safe then so be it.
Now, some of the civil rights people call body scans a shocking invasion of privacy. Give me a break!
Don't fly if you really feel that way.
I would rather be scanned than patted down by a stranger.
But the puzzle is more complicated. We must have properly trained people who are able to spot potential trouble.
I say bring in the Israelis to teach us how to do it. They are experts at focusing on behavior of passengers. They interview travellers. They make eye contact and they pretty well know when something isn't kosher. There is a reason why El Al is the worlds most secure airline.
The problem is right now we treat all passengers the same, but not all passengers are an equal threat.
Face it -- I don't think my mother should be considered the same threat as the guy from Yemen.
Some countries are just more dangerous than others. Terrorists also tend to be young men travelling alone.
Political correctness has no place in this. It is about security.
It's the reality of 2010.
Yes, we need any edge technology can give us.
But at the end of the day. Nothing is going to beat a well trained human mind knowing exactly who poses a risk.
And that is the naked truth.
New Year's Hopes
Well, a new year has begun and it will no doubt be an exciting one in Canada.
The Olympics will be something to marvel at. We will be proud of what will happen in Vancouver.
Also, expect a federal election this year.
Stephen Harper is closer to a majority than ever and he knows it. Unless he tries to shut down Parliament forever.
The opposition is in disarray ... you know Harper must be dancing a jig when even Liberals think of the good old days with Stephane Dion.
My big wish for the year is that somehow we can slow things down a bit. I'm not sure I need the fastest this or the latest that.
Can we somehow jump off the technology express? Can we take a break from all the texting and emailing and talk to each other...? Just downshift a bit. Can we all just take a deep breath?
Slower is often so much better.
