Quebec's Bureau of independent investigations (BEI) is taking on a new case: the death of a 25-year-old man at the hands of police.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday officers were called to deal with a man who was staying still in the middle of a roadway in St. Georges de Beauce.

When Sureté du Quebec officers arrived they turned on their flashing lights of their police car for a few moments and the man took off.

Police chased the man on foot, cornering him in a parking area, when the man slashed one officer with a knife.

The officer then shot the man, and his death was pronounced in hospital.

This is at least the seventh police-related death in Quebec this year.
