A Brossard man who was acquitted of fatally shooting a police officer almost two years ago was sentenced Tuesday to 20 months in prison for possessing and storing illegal firearms.

The sentence for Basil Parasiris is what the Crown and defence lawyers had jointly recommended.

With time already served, Parasiris has 16 months left in the sentence.

Parasiris was acquitted last June of killing Laval police Const. Daniel Tessier when police serving a search warrant stormed his house in a pre-dawn raid in March 2007.

He was also acquitted of attempting to kill another police officer, while the warrant used for the raid was declared illegal by a judge.

Parasiris, who is suing police and the Quebec government, told his trial he acted in self-defence and that he believed he was fighting off home invaders when he fired.
