A Valleyfield school is the latest in the Montreal area to come down with a mould infestation.

The Gault Institute informed students and parents several weeks ago about the mould, and the growth is being cleaned up this week.

However some parents believe the school is not being honest about the full extent of the problem.

Catherine Blouin said her son has often been sick, and that other children have been diagnosed with mould-related symptoms.

"My son's been sick a lot with nausea, dizziness, headaches due to that," said Blouin.

She has yet to take her son to a doctor, but she has taken many photos showing water has been causing rot on the children's lockers.

Denise Allard said she has smelled signs of mould for the past year.

"When you think that it smells in the daycare centre, you come in and it smells very bad," said Allard.

The New Frontiers School board said the problem is not that extensive, and that crews have determined it is limited a small area -- but they will inspect other rooms to be certain.

"Right now the area of concern is restricted exclusively to the office area," said Mike Helm.

Mould has been a concern at many schools, especially those within the Commission scolaire de Montreal, which has closed six buildings since 2011.

However this is believed to be the first instance of mould in the smaller New Frontiers Board, which operates off the island of Montreal.

Parents do not believe the mould is limited to one small section of the Gault Institute, and at least one is thinking about keeping children home even after the mould is removed.

"I'm not even sure I'm going to be sending my kids to school Monday morning when he comes back. I'm really concerned," said Allard.

"We want full disclosure."

"The Director of Educational Services for the school board said he is not trying to hide the extent of damage.

"The safety and security of staff is a priority for us," said Helm.

The board has to deliver a report on the cleanup to the Public Health Dept. and the Workers Safety Board on Monday.

So far both those agencies are satisfied with how the New Frontiers Board is operating.
