South Shore commuters will have to brace themselves for yet another phase of road repair on the Mercier Bridge and near the Champlain Bridge, this time on a holiday weekend.

Mercier Bridge

In what has been billed the largest bridge reconstruction project ever undertaken in Canada, the Mercier Bridge is undergoing a series of repairs set to extend the life of the bridge for another 75 years.

Over the next three weeks, workers will be fixing corroded steel on the underside of the bridge, reinforcing the metal in preparation for the new heavier decking, set to be installed in the spring.

One southbound lane out of two will be closed from 10 p.m. to 10 a.m. from Monday to Friday on the following days:

  • Monday, Oct. 4 to Friday, Oct. 8
  • Monday, Oct. 11 to Friday, Oct. 15
  • Monday, Oct. 17 to Friday, Oct. 22

On weekends, the southbound section of the bridge will be closed from Friday at 11 p.m. to Monday at 5 a.m., with one lane open in either direction on the inbound side.

  • Friday, Oct. 8 to Monday, Oct. 11
  • Friday, Oct. 15 to Monday, Oct. 17
  • Friday, Oct. 22 to Monday, Oct. 25

Nuns' Island Bridge

Pavement work on the Nuns' Island Bridge near the Champlain Bridge will be taking place at the same time thanks to a weather delay, said Jean-Vincent Lacroix, spokesperson for the Jacques-Cartier and Champlain Bridge Corporation.

"This closure was supposed to already be done but because of the weather, we've had to keep rescheduling this closure," he said, adding that it can't wait any longer, in case the temperature drops too low to be able to pave the road.

"Now it's at the same time as our closure on the Mercier Bridge."

Major work for the Nuns' Island Bridge will end for the year after this weekend. The bridge will close Friday, Oct. 8 at midnight to Sunday, Oct. 10 at noon.
