Montreal police are investigating an explosion at a commercial garage, after a driver crashed his van into its garage door.

It happened Tuesday night at 10 p.m. on 4th Avenue in the Riviere-des-Prairies sector, between Arthur-Léveillé Street and Honoré Vaillancourt Street.

When police arrived at the garage, the driver of the van had left the scene. A search around the building revealed traces of accelerants, so the case has been transferred over to the arson squad.

Investigators continued their work at the scene and have met with the owner Wednesday morning. The police are also looking for witnesses. They do not have a description of the driver.

Police Cst. Eric Labad said the fire caused by the explosion was quickly under control. Aside from the garage door, the building was not heavily damaged.
