A Quebec court judge heard sentencing arguments Friday for a former customs official who greased the wheels for drug smugglers.

Nancy Cedeno was found guilty last year of corruption, but avoided convictions for conspiracy to import drugs and gangsterism.

Cedeno would pre-stamp customs cards so drug couriers could go through customs without being searched.

Her defence lawyer says Cedeno has already been punished enough, having lost her job, her marriage, and her friends.

However the Crown says those personal consequences of her crime are not a suitable punishment, especially for a public official in charge of guarding our borders.

Prosecutor Alexandre Dalmau said Cedeno cannot be forgiven because she opened the door to criminals.

"It is like she was from the city of Troy and gave the horse to the greeks so they could enter the fortress," said Dalmau.

He is asking that Cedeno be sentenced to five years in prison.

Her lawyer, Robert Bellefeuilles, says Cedeno should receive no jail time because of extenuating circumstances.

"At the time she's doing this, she's not thinking clearly, her judgement is altered because of personal difficulties," said Bellefeuilles. "There was no shred of evidence that she got money out of this."

Cedeno was originally arrested and charged in connection with a raid against mobsters in 2006.

One accomplice was sentenced to three years in prison, while another received a 14-year-sentence.

Both sentences are being appealed.

The judge will render his decision on Cedeno's case on May 13.
