Home daycare workers in Laval and other regions of Quebec walked off the job Friday.

It's the first in a series of rotating strikes planned for home daycares across Quebec.

On Friday daycares closed in Laval, the Laurentians, Central Quebec and the Mauricie.

The Federation of daycare workers is demanding more money from the provincial government, arguing that the owner-operators and employees work a 50-hour week but are only paid for 35 hours.

The Federation began negotiations with the provincial government last year and says the discussion has gone on far too long.

Home-based daycares in the Outaouais region and Abitibi will close on Tuesday, while Montreal daycares will be closed on Oct. 15.

A province-wide walkout is scheduled for Oct. 20.

Meanwhile Private home daycares, which are not part of the $7-a-day program, are planning their own protest on Oct. 24. That demonstration would affect 45,000 children.
