MONTREAL—The combination of a powerful gust of wind and previous construction work brought down a tree in Westmount on Monday afternoon.

The tree toppled over from its roots and landed across Melbourne Ave. near Melville St. Neighbours say workers had excavated a nearby pipe last week, cutting the tree’s roots as part of the work.

With winds over 40 km/h on Monday, the work may have weakened the tree enough to allow the strong squalls to knock it over.
