Quebec's Automobile Insurance Board will soon have a new tool to simplify driving across the border.

It's in response to U.S. regulations taking effect in a few months requiring Canadians who enter the United States to prove their citizenship with a passport or special driver's licence.

For $40 extra, Quebecers can get a licence with a chip in it that contains identifying information for border agents.

The new licences will be available next month.

The S.A.A.Q. expects about 10% of Quebec driver's permit holders will apply for the new card.
