MONTREAL - The next president and chief executive officer of the Montreal Canadiens will be one of the men who owns the team.

Geoff Molson will assume the position on June 30, 2011 after spending the next year working under current president and CEO Pierre Boivin.

In announcing the move on Monday, the team labelled it a "succession plan."

Boivin has spent 11 years in the job and will become a member of the board of directors once Molson takes over.

The three Molson brothers -- Geoff, Andrew and John -- head an ownership group that reportedly paid US$575 million to buy the Canadiens and the Molson Centre from George Gillett last year.
