A five-alarm fire ripped through a Montreal building on Tuesday evening.

The three-storey commercial/residential building on Fourth Ave. near Masson in Rosemont was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived shortly before 7:30 p.m.

100 firefighters were needed to battle the flames into submission.

They evacuated 40 people from the building, some of whom will be able to return home on Wednesday.

Damage to store and 12 apartments is estimated at $250,000.

The fire seems to have accidentally started in upper-floor sheds that are attached to the building.

One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries.
